Thren I
All tears – all of theraclities
All laments & complaints of Semonides
All griefs in the world, all sighs
All regrets, sorrows, and wringing hands
All yes all gather round my abode
And help me to bewail my departed lovely child
From whom unholy death has divided me
And in a sudden has stolen bereft me of so many joys.
So as a dragon when he sees a hidden nest
He takes the brood of the nightingale & feeds
the veracious throat – while meanwhile the unhappy mother
Flies round the next crying & attacks the spoiler
But in vain. The cruel spoiler on herself
And the abandoned one cannot escape on her swift wing.
It is in vain to weep – ye will tell me
But by God! what are tell me is not all vain in this world
All is vain – we grasp after but grasp illusions
The course of our life is a continual error ( )
I know not what is vainer – weeping grief publicly
Or struggling with the efforts of nature.
