Duma – Glinski by Niemcewicz p 486.
In the dreary gloom of the subterranean Vaults
Whether the gladdening beam of sun had no access.
Where on a scanty lamp hunging down from the cei from the ceiling down from the dark ceiling
Threw around a dim and scanty dim light
Glinski so famous by treas victories and crime
Spent his days in misery, gnawn by the stings of conscience.
His forhead was ploughed (sillonć) durchfurcht by years and grief
His grey hair dishevelled fell in disorder
The sockets without eyes, covered with blood
On his face were engraver the scars of long sufferings
His head inclined on one hand he sat –
Groaned – and made the dungeon resound with his bitter complaining.
With him was his only Child his daughter
The model of virtue, grace and youth
She rather would reigned the sweet inducements of the world and the sweet freedom
And be the solace of his unfortunate father
Cheerfully she abide lived in that dreary dark solitated
Wasting the dawn and the bloom of her life
"Father", she said "I beseech you by this tender tears
Comfort thyself, cease of thy grief and despair
'Tis true, the chains are heavy on thy hands
But even in the dungeon the hope is not lost
Thou may perchance spend the remainder of thy gray age
Among thy friends, in the bosom of thy father-land.
'My Fatherland! Oh, what dreary remembrance!
What assemblage of Cr crimes rush at once on my memory.
The worn of conscience gnaws at my soul
And scares the sweet sleep from my the heavy eyelids
Traitor, I overran her with at the head of her enemies,
Can No moment of relief can be for a traitor!
