Elated in pride by my deeds, and that my Monarch's praise
I knew no moderation in my bold enterprises
The House of Zabrzezynski was long a thorn in my eye
I surrounded it at midnight, and butchered all in sleep.
And, then, when the nation refused to act according to my will
With foreign forces I invaded tried to revenge on my country
O shameful deed as well as the recollection of it is bitter
The view of the kindred Eagles and Pogons (X)
Was unable to avert my head fro cruelty and crime
Nor strike out the sword from my hand
At the head of Russia's inimical power
O was A Pole, I fought against the Poles!
At the end of the battle fight, seeing on the field of battle
Strewed by many known faces of my countrymen and friends
That view opp oppressed my heart
The tears of repentan concious guilt burst from my eyes
I know was aware that I acted like an outcast
Entreated my King to forgive me my crime.
My enemies who watched my steps
Made known my secret project to the Czar
My repentance and return to virtue
He considered as a treachery. Incensed with fury
He commanded my eyes to be put out
And in chains to confine me in that dreary dungeon
X A White Eagle on the arms of Poland and Pogonia a Horse in gallop
with a rider holding his sword ready to
strike, are calle are the Arms of Lithuania. The
last are called Pogonie from pursuing. Gonic in
Polish is to pursue.
