The Death of Stephen Potocki,
A Historical Tale
by
Julian Niemcewicz.
(About The middle of the 17th century.
Come, youthful heroes, and listen my lays,
And the mournful strains of my plaintive lyre;
Set a tale of the deeds of ancient days
In your bosoms awaken true glory's fire:
Come, hear how a bright unperishing wreath
Of Fame was gained by a warrior young,
Who died for his country, a glorious death,
While the fierce din of combat around him rung.
The rebel Cossacks desolation had spread
Wide over Podolia's fertile plain;
In the cavern'd cliffs where the Mothers had fled,
Re-echoed the wildly lamenting strain:
The ploughman deserted his plough; all around
The peasants away were to slavery torn;
With his maid in the chains of captivity bound
The Shepherd went rather than leave her forlorn.
