To Potocki, Sclavonia Sarmatia's valiantest chief,
Now age-worn and reckless of fortune and fame,
When the wailing lament, and the shriek of grief,
And the wild tale of war and of slaughter came,
He heavily sighed, heaved a sigh and a stream of tears
Rolled over his wan and furrowed cheek,
He thought on the strength of his youthful years,
And he wept that his arm was old and weak.
When his strength now no longer can answer his will,
When the dart from his hand feebly drops on the field,
His son shall succeed who has courage and skill
To curb the war-steed, and the bright blade to wield.
The gallant young Stephen had often repin'd
That in slothful inaction years over him should roll,
For him noble daring and beauty were joined,
And the war-cry woke trembling delight in his soul.
"My Son," said the chief with deep sorrow opprest,
"Thy aid, in her perils, thy country requires,
"Go, haste at her call, let her shield be thy breast,
"Let thy actions be worthy thyself and thy sires:
"Thy life to thy country alone these dost owe,
"Thy blood and thy service she justly may claim;
"Content to the tomb of my fathers shall go
"My grey-head, when I hear of my warrior's fame."
