His heart heaved full — he could speak no more; —
A silent tear in her eye there hung,
A lily-white scarf from on her neck she tore which she wore
And she bound on the breast of her hero young:
"What thy country has lost to recover again,
"Go, adorn'd with this token of love sincere!
"And may'st thou now and ever remain
"Brave youth! as happy as thou art dear!"
At the sound of the drum and the Clarion's blast,
The bands of warriors mustering came,
Thick clouds of rolling dust where they past
Rose, pierced by the sword and the helmets flame:
The court, the portals, the lofty walls
Are crowded with friends, and with gazers on;
The gate is thrown open, the draw bridge falls,
And away to meet the foe they are gone.
In the gloom of the night they march'd away,
Till they to the yellow waters yellow waters, the name of a lake came nigh;
And they saw the Sun, on that fatal day,
Rise and in a bloody and frowning sky.
Seen the camp of the rebels extended wide,
As far as the eye its glance could throw,
Undaunted the Gallant Potocki descried,
And rushed with his slender band on the foe.
