Before him fell the Holy City's walls,
Thy daughter, Sian, wept in slavery long;
[Crushed] whelped in the dust her palaces and halls;
No more Mount Calvary's sacred scenes among
Kneel pious pilgrims; drear desertion falls
The Saviour's [holy] sainted tomb; and impious throng
Insulting trampled where the fallen man,
Salvation's sacred [work at mystery first] began.
The valiant Osman then [possess'd the throne], the throne possess'd
Osman, whose conquests [wide their boundaries ]like a torrent spread;
In So daring deeds ]who ne'er was tardy known], who ever forward miss'd
[And joy'd] [His Sires'] red path of pride ambitious path [who joy'd] he to tread:
[That their designs might roll in triumph on His 2 busy bride and 3 love of conquest found 4 no rest
[He vow'd destruction on each] But in devoting every Christian head.
Impious! to deem [that human power, the high] a tyrant's peevish rod
What God himself had planted could destroy. could raise or blast what had been raised by God
Such thoughts he cherish'd, and the powers of Hell
Fanned his ambitious flame, before his eyes
They bad fresh wreaths of shadowy laurels dwell –
A filmy web; tho' victory's [triumphing] heedless cries
Rung in his ears [illusive], like music sorrows swell
[Fierce plundering bands, deluded thus,] Twas thus that deluded warrior bands became
A scourge to nations, to the world a shame.
