"Awake! let them behold in thee whatever
"Befits a conquering nation's Monarch, scarce
"Of sloth, delights the steely mail to wear,
"A wakeful eye anticipating morn;
"Thine armed host waits thee, [not a] nought is wanting there
"[To] of valour but a leader fierce they burn
"For the wild joy of battle; thus of yore
"Their sires were fame; they eager pant for more.
"By glory led, whose brightly beaming star
"No noble mind to follow e'er desired,
"Such step is certain conquest; on to war
"Thy heroes lead, and let destruction's tide
"Ingulph the Christians, o'er their lands afar
"Spread woe's dark veil; [thy sword] Saulchionall deeply dyed
"With blood shall [to] on the faithful joy bestow, –
"That sword which flashes death upon the foe."
Like some wild boar, that, in his covert deep,
On the soft moss outstretched & slumbering lies,
Soon as he hears the hunter's horn, from sleep
Arous'd the monster starts with rushing noise,
Bristling with wrath, deep panting, foam-bursts leap
From his grim jaws, to frenzy driven he flies
Full on the sound; thus at the vision's frown,
Upsprung stern Osman from his couch of down.
