Thro' all the empire messengers were sent,
Through to the camp from every quarter drew;
Re-echoing shouts of joy and mirth were blunt;
The eye all round met splendours bright & new;
The old, the young, sires, children, to augment
The army's strength, crow'd shickening on the view;
For king and country's sake to meet the strife,
And peril, for the Koran's faith creed, their life.

High o'er the lofty palace gate unrolled
Floated the Prophet's standard, where appear
Bright gems, and pearls, and rich embroidered gold
Jewels, and precious diamonds glancing clear:
The people gazing reverently behold
These sacred words of Truth in awe and fear:
'There is no God but God, the Infinite one,
His Prophet Mahomet, and he alone.'

Soon as upon that the gale its folds were flung,
Thousand acclaims burst forth on every side;
Each fanizar his clashing Cymbals swung,
The quiver'd Spahi's shout swell'd wild and wide;
From earth re-echoed acclamations rung;
Stoop'd to the ground each seven-fold horsetail's pride;
Even Osman rose and bent his haughty neck,
While thus aloud the aged Mufti spake.
