"Faithful! ye from the nations chosen, mighty deeds
"And sacred duties to perform, ye race
"Of Samuel! follow where that standard leads
"To fame immortal; 'gainst the feeman's face
"Rush fearless; what from Heaven itself proceeds
"Hear me declare; 'your nerves for battle brew,
"The Prophet's standard waving to the sky
"The Infidels shall blind and shall destroy'.
"Rewards for thy brave deeds that wait on thee,
"By hope, Lord of the faithful! pre-enjoy;—
"Deeds destin'd thee to do, by Heaven's decree,
"To raise thy people's power and glory high
"Over ruin'd foes; Cera's victory
"Few scaf'd, that nation utterly destroy;
"Their ruin let the unyielding view dismay'd,
"Live then, and reign, by all the world obey'd."
The Prophet's volume in his hand he took,
And read its brain-sick mysteries aloud;
Dark words of impious blasphemy he spoke,
Breathing his prayer first for the monarch proud,
Next for the chiefs, and those who meet the shock
Of battle, lastly for the slavish crowd:
Minlah, Linaum, Sancton, and Dervise grave,
Assistance in these sacred duties gave.
