His palace then the Sultan sought again
At his command from realms that distant lay
Came warriors brave; where struggling on, with pain
Thro's rugged cliffs Euphrates bursts away;
Bearing the produce of the fertile plain,
Where Tigre's deep and rapid cleaves his way,
Where o'er its rocky bed Araxes roars,
And gnaws unceasingly its granite shores.
Where Nile's rich waves, free'd from each deafening fall,
Their easy path thro' Egypt rolling sweep, –
Freshen the thirsty plains for rain that call;
Entering the bridal chambers of the deep
In seven-fold steps; Youth in rich armour all
Numidia sent, from Zaara's mountains steep
Came chosen bands; from Afric's bounds along
Of swarthy came a countless throng.
From parch'd Arabian climes were led by fame
A shepherd race, browned by the flaming sun;
From the sea-coast numbers, late conquered, came;
Fezans who joy to tread where gore streams run, –
From Mecca and Medina, towns which claim
The Prophet's birth, came many a daring one;
And to the Camp on fame or plunder bent,
From Lebanon and Carmel many went.
