a maid whose magic charm robbed my heart &
enchained my eyes, & so charmed me that my heart
& soul are always with her. My parents are in
the realms of heaven. You have kindly received
an orphan to your home. O heavier is an
orphan than a stone! You, merciful have opened
your gates to me. Did not repent your cares &
kindness – wl. taught me to labor & the fear of God
– and your only daughter in your cot preserved
for me as a wreathed bride with a wreathƚ ƚ Wreath – lived as representative of a dower and already
as you said while I was a child I rocked her for
my future bride wife. Not ingratitude – not in
obdurate Soul forces me to discover my grief to you,
but heaven's desire inexplicable, commands me
to grieve you & to shame myself. Let me go
with empty hands – I will labor in the house
of strangers for without Halina I cannot
live I am useless to men & hateful to myself.
