Here tears shot from Bronislawa's eyes. Stanislaus
silent inclined his head in his hand & said to
him in a paternal words. 'Why thy father was
about to quit his earthly life, he commended thee
to my care. I love thee therefore, as God in heaven
knows – that I had nothing more dear than thee – &
thou knowest unremembering that old age bends
me down, rushest on the perils of the world, –
wilt quit me for spite of the care I bestowed on thee
and for the happy futurity I had prepared thee. Thou will
bring unhappiness into every dwelling when thou
quittest me thus in grief & shame. Youth!
thou didst engage in a dangerous course. I
cannot bless thee – I cannot let thee go.'
