will of her family then let John assist thee
and like a good Son bring her as a daughter
in law hither.
John & the languid Wiesƚaw proceed together
Wiesƚaw the speedier for love and youthful strength
guided him thro' mountains, dells & fields and
when they came where the maid dwelt they sang
under her window.
The beds are covered with flowers
Rosemary & rue blooms
A wreath lays in the window
Here is a daughter to be married.
A youth will come from the distance
Will bow to father & mother
The daughter will pluck all his flowers
And seek with him another mother
For the last time the rosemary!
You will wreath the maiden's brow
Green me & in the beds
None will water thee now.
It is the custom in Poland for the young man who asks
a maiden in marriage to take the most venerable
of his friends to plead for him – he is called Swat
