Sketch of the nations subsequent to the French revolution
Effects of the national spirit
Subsequent to the period of the French revolution
and the partition of Poland a military
despotism was established throughout
Europe to which exerts till the day of to over awe the people, which
exerts till the present day its power.
At different times the people resisted it
and Italy and Spain are instances. They
miscarried: for the success in such cases
depends not only on the sufficient provision
of the national spirit, but also on those
of physical force, and of physical situation of the country. As yet Greece
along seem to carry off the palm of
victory in the struggle after emancipation.
If the Greeks succeed, as it
seems they will, their success will then be
the result of the national spirit which
they nurtured in their bosoms through
so many confines of their slavery.
A nation that has a national spirit
is still a nation. An attempt to eradicate
it can does not subdue but
irritates the minds. A grown up oak
will not bend and still less break.
Its branches may be struck off but its
stem will resist.
