National spirit of the Poles – continued
To confirm or rather to enlarge my assertion on the subject of the national
spirit of the Poles, I cannot do better than to
refer you to a passage in Niemcewicz Historical
songs (page 437.) who with an integrity
worthy of his character as a distinguished
writer, and with a boldness worthy of
a companion of the struggles and the exile
of Kosciuszko in spite of the jealous eye and danger
of the Russian government, says says thus frankly:
"Discord and dissension may for a time
have lulled the Poles into a lethargic
sleep as in regard to the public advantages of their country;
but their ancient free government has
no doubt, developed in all its force
the under boldness courange, and nobles
past sacrifices for their what they in defending
its fre laws laws and liberties – has developped
if I may express it so; the iron will to
exist as a nation. Of this, so many instances
may be found in our history. The very nobles
who were so eager in enlarging their privileges,
and were reluctant to any thing like
the taxation; when they saw the country endangered
they led well Army numerous troops to defend it,
which they equipped at their own expenses.
