of freedom & of enquiry. II.72

In the same number as some most interesting detail
of the effects of the torture in a recent instance in
Germany, in which, "In six individuals the fear of
the bastonnade was more powerful than the fear of death.
One innocent man perished, & five determined to
perish by a public death rather than undergo the
ignominy of that punishment by which it was sought to them extort from them the confession of a
crime of which they were wholly innocent.

One Who but blushes to contemplate the slow progress of reason & justice
among mankind, when it is remembered than even in a Republic
(Holland) & as late as 1803, the torture was applied. In 1809
a law professing to abolish the torture served only to confirm as
it allowed a judge to adopt rigorous measures to obtain conversant
answers. It was only in 1821 that the torture was abolished in
