Geneva
The general tine of society in Geneva is highly intellectual
& (with the exception of Göttingen Weimar) perhaps no
town in Europe could be found so small, & so distinguished
for the number of its literary inhabitants it contains. It has
become of late the asylum of a number long list of illustrious refugees
connected with the events of Naples & Piedmont – tho' to
several it has refused an asylum, in consequence, it is
said of the threats of surrounding despots.
The local government of Geneva is of a very aristocratic
character, & strange violations of public right & of individual
rights have been effected introduced, in order to give to or maintain to the Jew an
ascendency over the many, – or to maintain their
usurped authority. Thus in the lists of
the has been in the habits of
selecting not those who have had the greatest, but those
who have had the least number of votes, – & thus in
spite of the existence of the most distinguished
members of the Legislative body, its sittings are
eld in secret, & all its deliberations concealed
from those who are most interested in their propagation
