Geneva – Religion
The changes which have taken place in the creed of the
church of Geneva interested me greatly. That in the very
throne of Calvin's glory – in the spot where that reforming
bigot sent Servetus to the stake for his anti-trinitarian
opinions – Calvinism should be as it were expatriated and
Unitarianism becomes the predominant religion is not the
least curious fact in modern church history.
That in the religious opinions of thinking men, – who admit
no other authority than that of the scriptures & of their own honest jugement
applied to their elucidation – great there should be incitability &
vanity would be expected by all who have studied the human mind
& that, if Christianity is to continue in a triumphant course – if
it is to become a religion of universal acceptation it must be a religion
very different from that which has been hitherto proposed by the
majority of christians – will be scarcely less obvious to any one who
has calmly & honestly contemplated the progress of infidelity. In
the combat which has been raging the ranks of christianity have
been greatly thinned – those of scepticism & of unbelief greatly
replenished. Is it Christianity then – pure & genuine Christianity
which has been abandoned? No! – It is a religion stained with
cruelties & persecution – with usurpations & violence – it is a
religion obscured by mysteries – encumbered with false & foolish traditions
