which was prominently visible there then. An anonymous paper was
sent to the Consistory then urging the re-establishment of several
obsolete ceremonies, & accusing the Reformers of having corrupted the
faith of their fathers. This libel is believed to have proceeded from
the Catholics, but it did not produce much impression – till in 1813
a pamphlet was circulated thro' the same channel entitled
Respectueuse Representation à Mill la Pasteurs de Geneve – The pamphlet was brought from Lyon by the Courier to delivered
to the Sœur Grise Benoite – She handed it over to a zealous
Catholic priest called Vaurin – & he undertook to disseminate
the different tracts according to their addresses, – & as a work
of inpererogation scattered them about plentifully in the Town.
If this germ – this Respectueuse Representation – (having so pure an anger
& coming from individuals so interested in preserving the purity integrity of
the protestant faith & is the term of all the events which have
troubled the peace of the Génevan church are but the
development – and such is the great auxiliary of which our
English protestant missionaries have availed themselves with such
eager avidity. Its immediate consequences would however have
been soon forgotten – & the application of the old maxim Divide
& empéra would have been out of place – if they spirit of intolerance had not been fanned
& fostered by the fanaticism of Masamo Kreisener who visited Genéva in the same year (1873). The Moravians had continued
to hold meetings &its some other individual whose orthodoxy was of the
more violent sort – & at these meetings two or three young Theological
students were accustomed to attend. These young men were fit objects
