On the Literary Spirit of Christianity & of reform

There is no religion which like but christianity that at the same
time invites the poor & the uneducated uninstructed by its beautiful
simplicity & offers to the sublime researches of philosophy the
noblest conceptions of the its divine author. While on the one hand
it presents us with the picture of unlearned & ignorant men
– armed with the power of miracles & superhuman eloquence
subduing the arguments & confounding the subtelties of the Sages
of Greece & Rome, – on the other we see a spirit of consideration wisdom
connecting itself with the best of the ancient philosophy: – moving
on with the enlightenment, or rather enlightening the human
race, – it adding by its up enrolling in the best
of its advocates the noblest, – best & the wisest of hum mankind
& adding to their literary honors a splendour caught from
the glories of heaven.

Destined to a gl bright career – "to go forth
conquering & to conquer" Christianity as it is purified
by the glowing enlightment improvement of time appears more & more
attractive interesting even to the proud research of proud philosophy. As man seems to be led on pri in one decided
course of improvement mental advancement it is obvious that a religion which should
grow with his growth & strength must be founded on his
its intellect & not on his passive obedience – for the most
obvious duty of enlightened enquiry is to break the shackles
of authority, – to examine truth in its nakedness, – & to own
no teaching but that of argumentative reasonings.
