Alderman Reygate's Speech
16 Feb 1825
but on your dry new fangled philosophy
And on your schemes & your systems
Sun it is crablied & cruel I cross of ye
Thus to stir up such a terrible power
What do you mean by your books economical
Barefoot pretenders, say what you intend?
Projects so full of chimeras, so comical
Gentlemen! really I can't comprehend
I have been reading the pages of history
but in no part of the book could I see a
Hint or suggestion t' unravel the mystery
Even could not form an idea
Not give a guess at your Bills of Exchequer –
Debts and debentures my senses confound
O my poor country – you're going to wreck for
Hawk to the winds & the waters around.
