The pangs unuttered thoughts create
The sweat drops beaming on my brow
The words of anguish & of hate
That tremble on my lips, even now –
Are they not human? Are they not
Of passions such as those that bow
The white man spirit – thou which blest
The white mans page of vice & war?
Yes! He who moulded human clay
And breath'd his spirit there – who plann'd
Creatures infinite display
Hath colored with a painter's hand
Various & beautiful, the race
Of man's great family – His brand
Of slavery marks the negro's face
Live – & Be Free – was His command.
