As far as our experience goes there is immortality in
everything which does not possess the power of reproduction.
The component parts of the earth – every thing to which we
attach the ideas of life has in itself the principle of
renovating birth or being. It is not so with the greater
masses – worlds do not generate worlds – Suns do
not procreate suns – nor has any new star appeared
in the vault of heaven in the memory of man or
the words of history.

Whenever we see decay, or destruction existing their
ravages, good is being produced or increased – improvement
advanced. Death sows the seeds of life & develops them: – &
reformation builds all its works out of the fragments of
abuse & evil. The generations that pass away only
make way for newer & newer generations that succeed them.
Can a purpose of benevolence be answered by the
blotting out a planet – a world – like this in which
we dwell – so full of harmony, beauty & of every good!
Can a state of blessedness be conceived as existing elsewhere
