I've often thought that there are very few real
Truths, which can stand of ridicule the best:
For ridicule is the spear-point of :
but fallacy & falsehood stand undress
Of these delusions at its touch. You do real
Service to truth's own cause – of all the best –
By opening it to all challenging severe examination
What is its only safe & sound foundation
What truth of all the truths enshrined by ages
Has ridicule, with all its tatteries, shaken?
The fooleries & the follies history's pages
Teach us have been for truth & right mistaken
Which has not ridicule upset ? the sage's
Wisdom Scorn is weaker less mighty than wit's barb smile – & Bacon
Was less man's benefactor than Voltaire –
Fo ridicules shakes evil everywhere. is wisdom's son & heir
Wisdom is ridicule's own son & heir
