What else can u unveils the proud & solemn gravity
Of insolent pretense? What else can reach
A monarch or a minister depravity
They are beyond the flight of common spirit
With all its pardon asking, cringing grsuavity
Ridicule's sharpen'd lanes can make a breach
Which widens of itself – & then delusion
With all its troops disperse in their confusion.
This very position will, I know be doubted
By wisdom's counterfeits & wit's sterility
It will be sneered at, scoff'd at, scorn'd & scouted
By solemn cant, self-seeking sham humility
By priests & knaves – who clamorously have shouted
O'er man's – poor man's – sad slavery & servility:
But I maintain it – it will stand the death shock
Of truth & time – of touchstones all the best. midst waves & winds a rock.
