Twould be indeed a miserable joy
To wander thro' the world, & every where
To find, or to create a friend, if when
The moment that must separate arrives
We must say Fare thee well for ever! – Words
Have not a sharper edge than when they speak
Of everlasting exile: – O not so
Be my Adonis! – I bear about O not so my friends
In the safe keeping of a faithful heart
They go with me where'er I go – they live
In my existence – their home is my heart!
And these I lend them when I seek theirs then.
Think not I hold no converse with my friends
But when I hear those voices! They have left
Their representatives in my inner Soul:
And youthful ones that know the sacred truth
Committed to them.
