Thursday Evening
Darkness, on the earth descending,
Draws its curtain o'er the scene,
Silence now, on eve attending,
Sits upon her throne serene.
Now the days concerns are over
And the laborers that retire;
From their common herd recover
Each his will appointed here.
Virtue nor reward possesses,
In unshaken peace of mind;
Wisdom with her wages blesses
All the toils of human kind.
Thy all searching eye can level
All distinctions; – & from thee
Who can hide one thought of evil?
Who deceive infinity?
