Thou art of noth spent & hast brought
Its energies to serve the holy cause
Of truth & liberty; – & thou hast taught
Many to love them – Wise & equal laws
Shedding their hallowed influence over thought
And feeling & brave action, – Human right
Persisted in – in the base worlds despite –
And deeds of worth heroic of heroes in conceived & wrought
In purest virtues, – these shall thy praise
For these have been thy promise – these thy love –
It is not I who may an altar raise
To thee, my friend – to thee; – for I have fought
In the same ranks with thee – but well may I approve
And honor, when I silence those debt tho' in those unworthy work lays
