Napoleon

Napoleon dead! – He dead, whose living name
Was clad shrined in something like proud omnipotence – He dead!
He dead – who to the chariot of his fame
Harnassed submissive monarchs, – who were led
Around the half-enfranchised world – a show
Of mocking & of scorn – their sceptres broken –
Their thrones' foundations bared – & every token
Of right divine – of tyranny – laid low.
For this we thank thee, & for this will hold
Thy memory in our hearts blessed! – Would we could forget
The wrongs thou didst to liberty – when Thou,
Thou no lighteneth Didst the of no nobler race, legitimate – old –
Didst Ruledst as the tyrants whom thou hadst upset
And then we saw thee fall – without regret
17/7/1821 Rouen
