France is in second-childhood – She has lost
All majesty – all power of national will –
I say not this because the gilded host
Parades the crowded streets – all crowded & all still
I say not this because one wish is efforts' crost
Another helpless:- n'er that follies fill
The page diurnal; – France did ever boast
Of such poor playthings; – nor I did deem it ill
That superhuman worship should be given
To him – who doubtless is, the Elect of heaven
Another Saviour – Near of Kin – I see So says the pastoral letter of the Archbishop of Rouen
To him – who died for man on Calvary –
(But Lo' He was no legitimate –) but because
France has no power to vindicate her laws.
