Didst thou not hear that joyful shout that rose
O'er all the fair fields of regenerate Spain –
From where the Moorish Guadalquivir flows
The And Bidasoa sends it back again –
And the loud of the Bicayan main
And that great middle-sea which Syria throws
Back on the Ebro: Old Castillia's plain –
Old La Mancha's an mountain glows & the snowy brows
With new-born liberty!
Of the wide Pyrenees – The vale renewed
Of brave Orlando! – & the Asturian hills
Where erst Pelayo raised his standard flag, – the Sound
Of million- echoed voiced, – of temperate freedom fills –
Yet freedom is as gentle as a child
Forgiving – how forgiving & how mild.
