of their philosophical learning, & on the decline of his house
these learning pilgrimages continued to be made to the Sth of
Europe by Arabic literature got thro' its western
notions.

Adelard a Benedictine Monk of Bath the translator of many
vols. on physic & medicine visit remained a long time in Spain to
the moors (11 Cent) & Dan Morley (?) enriched the literature
of the west of Europe with much oriental learning which he had
brought with him from the University of Toledo.

So universally was the Arabic studied & used that Aldrete mentions
it as a proof of the infinite goodness of God that the Castillian language
was not wholly extinguished – It was cherished & preserved by the few
unconquered & unconquerable wanderers among the mountains. In towns
& villages Mahommedan had made immense progress – the christian records
(not existing in the vulgar tongue, – had they existed they would have
preserved alike the language & the religion of Spain) even while lost
