The heaven is thy exalted destination
And God himself has deigned to call thee "Son".
Deem not life's vale devoted all to sorrow
Though rocks obstruct, & clouds obscure the way
Today may be all darkness; – but tomorrow
Will dawn with inextinguishable ray.
And tho' it dawn not – there's a holy pleasure
That o'er thy inner Soul its light shall may shed –
A joy that knows no change – that knows no measure –
Its beams shall form an Aegis round thy head
That pleasure is devotion! – Last thou seen found her
Leading her smiling happy charge along;
Look what Ten thousand fragrant flowers grow around her. What spirits Angels of joy upon her footsteps throng.
There See her o'er the cradle of an infant bending
And Forming his first soft accents into prayer; –
Those Or the imposing bed of death attending
Pointing to heaven, & holding converse there.
O make her then thy friend & thy protector supporter
Thy guide, thy protector, counsel; – If she be
