He whom thou hast scorned & spit upon – uprisen
From the dark tomb ere long thy judge shall be;
He whom thou fetteredst in a noisome narrow prison
He keeps the portal of eternity
A fatal fury furious frenzy! – O unlikely madness
O ruleless murderers! O disgraceful day!
That fatal hour, not years of woe & sadness
Not ages of distress shall cleanse away.
On golgotha that holy man of sorrows
The sent of gold – the meek lowly, the divine:
Was offered up – My grateful bosom borrows
A portion of its spirit Lord! from thine
Day Returning memory of his death! – I greet thee
My heart is thine, thou gracious one & good!
My life, – my soul, – my all I dedicate thee
A living sacrament of gratitude.
