In darkness, error rears its face unholy
And dreads the truth's Spirit-searching ray of truth influence
Beaming upon thy Beaming from thy cross; – to learning's pride thus folly,
To Jewish prejudice a stumbling block rock of offence
To us salvation! – Who like thee hath spoken
Who lived like thee, our saviour & our Lord?
In every act & thought a holy token
Of purity: – of truth in every word.
To fellow men – in common love assemble
One is your master – ye are brethren all;
His staff supported the weary ones who tremble
His hand shall lead the tottering ones that fall
For all he lived for he died lived, I died – A love undying
Gilded his lip with a supernal beam –
Shall we not love him – love each other? – vieing
In the fond hope to catch a ray from him?
