He, source of mercy – thron;d above
Delights not to condemn,
Or mire His Sun of light & love
Would never shine on them
Enough of sorrow & of shade
Are man's sad destiny.
Why Shall his dark path be darker made
By frowning bigotry.
When creatures insolent as weak
O'er fellow mortals stride
Tis tyranny – not truth they seek
They serve not heaven – but pride.
