Saturday Evening
Father! So all things hasten to their end
Following the beck track of severe stern mortality,
And so, unnoticed, doth our being end
To dark eternity's unmeasured sin.
How Blest, if when borne along the rapid river
Thy bark at last should reach the friendly welcoming shore:
Safe in the peaceful port of heaven Anchored in heaven's calm port of rest for ever:
That port which tempests shall disturb no more
Then Thou my God! – Then Thou my father art!
Thou glorious of unextinguishable show blaze
That Which when the twinkling stars of time depart
Dost shine with everlasting brightness on. Gilds with the fair reflection of thy rays
That Eden which beyond the dreary place tomb
Invites the wanderer to its fair abode,
Invites with promise of a heavenly home
And intercourse with angles & with God!
Teach me, thou righteous being one, that my career
Is but a filled with shade & dreamings doubting & visions fond
That all is vain & unsubstantial here
And All substance truths all reality beyond.
