And did do ye give the pilgrim say
His staff to help him on his way? And did doth your gentle spirits influence dry
The tear that dims the mourner's eye?

Do ye divest the threatening tomb
Of all its heart-appaling gloom? And open thro' its curtain portal riven
A holy welcoming path-way up to heaven?

Is it at your command the chain
Leaves the faint prisoner free again? Lifts That from his bed pale misery's sin
Rises – a re-created one!

Have ye for pity, have that glow
And smiles for joy – & sighs for woe –
And when life's lingering hopes are past
Unbroken slumbers at the solitude at last?

O holy night! – thy misteries
Bring Hast many a vision such as these.
And many an awful, fearful thought
Is by thy solemn presence brought
