Ac 1792 on
Lady Bentham ( Mrs Fordyce) to J.y Bentham
with the result of rescurches relative to the number of Bankers?
whether for the purpose of J .B.'s Ms
Paper Mischief.
The greatest generals sometimes fail: then do not dismiss
an unsuccessful subaltern your service; fortune may be kinder on a future occasion
I have sought in vain for information among the Windmill that books;
Dr. Baillie has never met with any on the subject— he promises to ask Coutts
& Drr Coombe — Dr. Coombe is most likely of all the men I know to inform
us. If you like to enquire of each house the year of its establishment
I can apply to Snow&Deane , & to Coutts.—
The enclosed was received this afternoon.
These are London directories as far back as 1758 in which bankers
names are inserted in the list of tradesmen, but I fear it would
be extremely difficult to procure them.
