Supposing the time to be arrived when If ever the Convicts are ever to be victualled from the settlement
by the produce of their own labour, and in so far without
expence to government, there were two consequences would follow the income of living
would be wanting to the settlers.
1. There would be no sufficient means of living for
the free settlers.
2. The danger of famine most would in all
probability be speedily increased. and repeatedly realized as would
permanent probability would at any rate be increased.

free settlers.
Robinson In New South Wales as elsewhere, provisions
form though the most considerable part yet but
a part of the means of subsidence. Cloathing, household
furniture, implements of husbandry and other
tools — these and various other classes are, according
to received ideas necessary to compleat the list: not
to speak of fermented liquors, especially ardent spirits,
which among in such an inhabitancy was regarded
as still more necessary than Escoffiaries. What
means have they of observing this secondary class of
necessaries? none. What equivalent to give in exchange
for them? — none.
