Remedies unavailing
Governors Sermons

Under the head of unavailing remedies unavailing as
they were I did not include the sermons by Governors.
Under the head of remedies I had them I must confess
no other applications than such as every where else
were found in practice more or less availing such as in which government
is every where obliged to rest its chance for submission
and obedience, such of which the efficacy power over
the human above faculties of mankind man is grounded on
that impression influences action upon his passive faculties
in the impression they make upon on his feelings. In the
discourses in question a point proposition all along through tacitly
assumed — is a fact proposition on the truth of which the chance
of every the smallest degree of success efficiency and utility on the part
of their exhortations depends is that it is in the power of sounds
mere sounds to stem the current of the strongest propensities
in human nature; that what is less than has less in it than a feather
will put activity into the man into whom hand into which a scourge
can put none: that which is is weaker has less strength in it than a straw will
stop the assisting hand that is not to be stopped by stone
walls: that the wretch who is not to be repeled from
the pleasures of intoxication by the pains of debility
nausea and headaches will be worsened form it by
an advice hearing the Governor say from the Governor to drink no more: that
the sluggard to whom the pains of extraordinary hunger and nakedness
are less irksome than the pains of ordinary labour will be
roused into activity by reading or hearing an exercise
of which the whole import is comprized in the word work:
having the word or its equivalent for its theme
that a man who having the means of monopoly in his
hands has been never bought but at a low price nor ever sold
but at a high one will be driven from his trade put out of conceit of his
traffic and his gains, by a caution to beware of launching into speculation.
