Their decision, therefore, being thus stained by mala
fides, is by reason of that contamination to be taken as full
null and void. And to if this mala fides of which Your Lordship's
administration having now has now received notice
Your Lordships administration should it persevere in
the same line, must be understood to be a sharer partaker
have assented assent, and stand stand in the place of an accessory
after the fact. In this supposition which mordious as
it is I would should be far enough from wishing to
start even in the character of a supposition were it any thing
less than necessary, their disobedience to the laws would
be your disobedience; their perfidy, Your perfidy: their
treachery your treachery; their oppression, your oppression.
It is in these accounts that the proof of mala fides
on their part becomes a necessary part of my case.
Committed as Your Lordship and Mr Addington
are with their distinguished personages, who present themselves
in no better character than that of culprits in my eyes
connected by those sentiments of friendship which are so publickly
professed, and therefore I doubt not as sincerely
intertwined, to render justice to the public in my person
or for shortness though such is not the correct view of the
matter — to me can not in the nature of things be a taste
more agreable than it was to Caesar to render justice
to Ligarius. In the present instance I feel but too
sensible there is in Cicero: no one but a Ligarius attempting
without support to clamber up the hill of justice
by himself: but with the head and heart in the plan of Cicero this
will must not hinder Your Lordship from acting the part of Caesar.
