4 Jany 1802 3 Colonies Thoughts
Great Britain has but two causes of war with this
nation. 1. Trade and Colonies Extension of Trade. 2. Honour and Glory.
France and other Continental powers have three
the above two and one more; extension of territory.
When Great Britain plumps again into an immersion war, it will
of her own seeking, it will be either for the want of common
sense or common honesty.
The rule of common honesty is Do unto others
as you would that others do to you. The rule of honour
and glory which is in the first place in opposition to
the rule of common honesty and thereby to the rules of common
sense is — Do to others what you would not bear
they should do to you.
Thieves have their slang, which has been collected
by collectors with no inconsiderable advantage
in several respects has been communicated to the public
by men of curious industry.
Honour and Glory men have these which if
collected might make no bad parody to the other.
As the thief may be known by his slang so
may the would-be on a large scale by his.
To The one talks of as
The other of shaking, troubling, other nations.
A war of all against not — and that a never-ending
one would be the fruit of such if carried into
practice: whereby they are by those who broach them talk in that stile as
far as their power extends to the utmost of their power.. Who is there that will bear
to be checked and troubled?
