Adam Smith, in speaking of diamonds, far
too much of what is called a philosopher—
and too little of what is called man of the
world. His Grandmother or any body's Grandmother could have informed
him better. Buonaparte—not an
man—was on this head of the same opinion with his
Grandmother. Though not unprovided either
in the way of fortune or in the way of marriage
—nor consequently having her fortune to make in
the way of marriage—the great Regent was
in his judgment worth wearing—and so much
so as to be worth reducing.++Account of the

There stood indeed, as there does stands still, an odd
act of Parliament or two in his way: but to him
who can make or break rules of arithmetic, what
signify signifies a wrap or two sheets of Paper such as Acts of Parliament. Parliament says Convicts
of a certain description shall be transported or sent to
the Hulks, or, when the National Penitentiary House
is built kept in the Penitentiary House.
