1. 10 Oct. 1799. Ld of the Treasury to Jy Bentham
Esq—Deed of appointment appointing him Trustee
of Funds at and near Millbank intended to be purchased
in part of the allotment for the Penitentiary House.
2. 12 Oct. 1799. Marquis of Salisbury to J. Bentham
the said Feoffee Conveyance of about 53 Acres at
Millbank in point as aforesaid. Price paid £12,000
N.B. The estate in question being all subject to
Leave the conveyance could be of no use till money were advanced
for buying them out under the Act. Ld Salisbury
offered to do it for £1000: the Surveyor General to whom
the issue had been referred recommended strongly the
acceptance of it. Mr In May 1799 Mr Bentham had
offered to take Ld Salisbury's place: because not taking any
part of the land but the instant it was wanted he could afford
to take it at that time, whereas it were to be taken immediately
it much more would probably be required: a probability which
that once abundantly verified. Dr Salisbury consented to the
above proposition: Mr Long declared his perfect approbation
of it: but from that time to this Mr Bentham has
never been able to get a single farthing for the purpose
nor consequently a single foot of land.
