Polit Economy

23 June 1802

Analysis

37
Nvelty in an
object encreases
the enjoyment
from it.

On the point of the object, the mass of enjoyments—
and in that respect the mass of national
wealth may be considered as encreased, more or
less, by every addition to the variety of the whole collection
of the instruments taken together—and accordingly therefore,
by novelty on the part of any one.

Note
These instructions about novelty as will be apt to appear
refined to a great degree of frivolousness:—but without them
it would be impossible to find any real value for a multitude
of objects to which a prodigious impertinence is attached in practice.
