Panopticon Preface
The interval being so great between the impression and
the publication of the ensuing pages, some account of the
causes of the delay will naturally be expected.
Another circumstance particularity will there is of which an account
will naturally be expected, and upon more cogent ground.
The ferment now made in abundance to three architectural
designs, none no one of which will soon be found. On
the other hand, the sender a Plate a design of that kind
will here be found, to which the Letter-press affords
no reformers.
The satisfaction which the reader is entitled to report
on the first head, necessitates a sort of history, which I shall
shall be rendered endeavour to render as short concise as possible.
Kotzebue has amazed the world with the most remarkable
of a generally interesting and very <add>active </add> life. The history of
Panopticon would contain the remarkable or public any thing period
of a very obscure one. Kotzbues which has every
thing in it but fiction that can open to a novel
future, has that liberty of termination, without which the most
interesting novel affords yields more pain than pleasure: poetical
the cost of justice stiled poetical and which considers
with respect, crowns gilds the catastrophe setting of his narrative.
Nothing that could bear admitt the name of justice mercy, much
less of justice, would will be to found from the beginning commencement down
to the present hour of man.
