Letter 3 N.S. Wales

18 Aug. 1802

II. Collins
Analysis

Depravity
—its cause.

Depravity in its various shapes has chiefly for its efficient cause
and measure the excess of the influence predominance of the self-
regarding and anti-social affections or either of them, as
compared with that of the social. An indication of it
is therefore alike afforded by symptoms either by of a preternatural
degree of strength on the part of the self-regarding or
anti-social affections, or by a preternatural degree of
weakness on the part of the social affections, considered
in the aggregate.

1. Rapacity

Rapacity is a disposition resulting from the preternatural
strength of the self-regarding affections:—it is
the excessive unbridled desire appetite for the instruments of enjoyment
considered in the aggregate—and especially for
that one of them which as been constituting the general
medium of exchange affords to the possession assurance
of obtaining upon occasion almost any of the others.

Rapacity has for its direct immediate existing causes the
strength of the several appetites of which those instruments enjoyments
and consequently their instruments are their objects. In
this way it is that drunkenness, sexual attraction, and
prodigality stand preeminent among the instruments to this
rapacity: prodigality embracing in its import all those
minor instruments which in their aggregate force
are scarce not equal to either of the other two.

2. Sloth

Sloth, or the aversion to labour, it may be observed though a sort of
negative propensity quality, operates as an possesses in respect of the excitement it affords to rapacity with
as much effect
all the efficiency of a positively impellent cause.
