Note to p XVI Improved prisons

In Howards' time At the time of one of Howard's visits
16 August 1779 debtors 51, Felons &c (so termed) 141 of whom
but 91 were Convicts and Fines (so termed) together.+ + Howard on Prisons pp. 213, 215 -
This was in the Old prison. In the New-built prison, the
quantity of room I being, I suppose, inlarged, the numbers of all
descriptions appear to have been encreased. IOn 178 the 18th of December
18th 1782, Debtors but 3 (this indicates an Insolvent Act) Felons &c, as before,
291. On the 22d of August 1783, Debtors 113, Felons &c as before, 224.
Onn y 17th of March 1787 Debtors 140. Felons &c 350
On the 26th of August 1788 Debtors 114 Felons &c 3499 - // // Howard on Lazarettos p. 125 .
